Grand Prix 2002
Subwoofer-of-the-Year

DVD ETC. magazine awards the SuperCube Reference a 99 Rating!

Here's what they had to say:

“The compact build and complete feature set of the SuperCube Reference make it an easy choice for integration into high-end installation or entry-level theaters … the SuperCube Reference literally rattled the filament loose in every light bulb in my home and set my neighbors' house alarm off … If you want to add the ultimate horsepower to your home theater system, purchase

Clint Walker, DVD ETC.

The Definitive SuperCube I
has triumphed again, this
time by garnering a "97" rating, a "Top Choice" award and being judged most musical ("top rankings among
the entire group") in an 18 subwoofer shootout in DVD ETC. Magazine. With multiple Subwoofer-of- the-Year awards, Best Buys, Editors Choice and now this, the SuperCubes are Hot! Hot! Hot! Here are DVD ETC.'s raves:

DVD ETC. TOP CHOICE:
"My love affair with Definitive
Tech speakers began
during an audition of
the PowerMonitor 900s a
few years ago. Def Tech has once again bested their efforts with the
SuperCube I. This sub
was the smallest of the
"Black Diamonds" in this
shakedown and proved itself as an all-around performer with some surprising attributes in general. I have not been very impressed by
the musical performance
of the small-box,
large-moving-mass woofers of late, so my impressions going into the audition with the SuperCube I were,
admittedly, somewhat tainted. However, music playback proved to be one of this tiny sub's strongest suits earning it top rankings among the entire group. Adding to that, this sub pounds out bass
notes with aggression. It was almost comical to see the tiny sub parked next to the giant Velodyne HGS-18, slugging it out note for note. In the end, the Velo proved much louder, but it was a respectful bout
nonetheless. The SuperCube I will hit you in the ankles and knock you off your feet, kick you while you're down, then kiss you and make up."

RATING: 97

SuperCube I, II and III Powered Subwoofers

Definitive's SuperCubes are a new breed of powered subwoofers which utilize unique technology and components in order to achieve state-of-the-art performance from remarkably small boxes. Remember, it is important to understand when you are evaluating the SuperCubes that you can not simply compare them to conventional subwoofers based on driver size. Because of their unique technology, the SuperCubes deliver far superior performance to conventional subwoofers which utilize drivers of 50% - 80% larger diameter. In fact, SuperCube I dramatically outperforms our previous 18" PF1800 in all important parameters.

Definitive's elegant and ultra-compact SuperCube subwoofers deliver ultimate bass performance from beautiful enclosures that fit anywhere.  They combine Definitive — designed, digitally coupled (patent pending) Class D digital switching amplifiers (1500-watts SuperCube I, 1250-watts SuperCube II) with extremely long-throw, huge magnet, front mounted subwoofer drivers (10" — SuperCube I, 8" — SuperCube II) which are tightly coupled to dual side-mounted, pressure driven infrasonic bass radiators (two 10" — SuperCube I, two 8" — SuperCube II). The SuperCubes deliver incredibly deep, high-impact low-frequency performance which extends 13Hz (SuperCube I) and 14 Hz (SuperCube II) with superbly tuneful high-definition transient response for bass that sounds as good with delicate music as with earth-shaking action movies. Both include complete input, output, level control, continuously variable high-pass and low-pass crossover facilities plus a continuously variable phase control and direct-in LFE input. These remarkably compact superwoofers (14" cube — SuperCube I, 12" cube — SuperCube II) feature Definitive's signature piano-gloss black end caps and wraparound grille cloth styling.

Definitive's High-Definition Subwoofer Drivers
Deliver Superior Detail and Lightning-Fast Transient Response

The powerful, high-definition drivers used in all our powered subwoofers were specifically engineered by Definitive for their task: to deliver rock-solid low distortion bass, reaching down to the lowest subsonic frequencies, with an outstanding quality of superior transient response unequaled in the world. The special ultra-stiff, low-mass cones (for super-fast transient response) are joined to specially formulated surrounds and long-throw voice coils and spiders. The incredibly rigid baskets are engineered to hold the massive magnet structures and large voice coils in absolute alignment. The high temperature voice coils are made of aluminum wound with triple insulated ultra-pure copper wire and baked in epoxy for power handling in excess of 750 watts.

Computer Synthesized Transmission Line Tuning (CSTLT)
for Extended Response and Improved Pitch Definition

Definitive's ProSub powered subwoofers incorporate a unique, highly effective computer synthesized transmission line tuning. Transmission line loading of low-frequency drivers has long been acknowledged among critical audiophiles as producing the deepest, cleanest and most uncolored bass response. The construction of a true and properly engineered transmission line is, however, an extremely complex and expensive procedure. Definitive's engineers have developed, with the aid of a supercomputer at a major Eastern university, a new bass tuning program which basically duplicates the loading of a transmission line (in terms of extended bass response, ideal transient behavior, and superior pitch definition) in a much more elegant and cost-effective cabinet construction. The drivers' construction combined with this unique transmission line loading minimizes required excursion, thus, improving transient response as well as ensuring maximum coupling of their output to the air in your room for bass literally powerful enough to shake concrete floors, as reviewers have noted.

Rock Solid Monocoque Non-Resonant Cabinets
Ensure Pure Low Distortion Response

The cabinet of a loudspeaker plays a large part in its sonic performance. Resonance and vibration can add unwanted distortion as well as drain away important energy from the system. Definitive's subwoofers utilize monocoque cabinets, which have been specifically engineered to be totally inert and vibration free, to ensure you of absolutely pure sonic reproduction. Monocoque means that the cabinet is of a unitized construction where all panels are permanently joined together into one solid structure. The cabinet walls themselves are high-density medite fused together by space-age polymer adhesives. The front and rear baffles are extra thick and the cabinets each incorporate multiple internal braces to ensure total solidity.

Completely Adjustable Electronic Crossovers
Assure a Perfect Match to Your System and Room

The sophisticated low distortion electronic crossovers incorporated in all our powered subwoofers are a masterpiece of design and execution. They contain a complete range of hookups, circuitry and features which allow the subwoofers to be connected and perfectly blended with any system as well as adjusted for optimum performance in any room.

All our powered subwoofers have continuously adjustable low pass filter controls which allow you to choose a roll-off of from 40 to 150 Hz for the high end of the subwoofer. This unique "dual stage" roll-off is extremely quick which ensures perfect blending with your main speakers as well as no unwanted upper bass or midrange radiation from the subwoofer. This is especially important because it gives you much greater flexibility in placing your subwoofer in your room without being able to hear where it is specifically located. All our powered subwoofers also have a separate low-level direct LFE input for Dolby Digital which bypasses the crossover network. All models have a built-in speaker level high-pass crossover preset at 80 Hz (except ProSub 60 preset at 100Hz) and, of course, a precision level control allows you to perfectly adjust the volume of the subwoofer to match your system and room as well as to fulfill your own personal sonic preferences.

A Full Range of Inputs and Outputs Facilitates Easy Hookup of Your Definitive Subwoofer to Any System

All Definitive powered subwoofers have a complete range of inputs, outputs and features to allow easy and effective hookup to any system either singly or in a stereo pair. Both (high) speaker level and low-level inputs are provided in case you don't have a subwoofer output. In addition, all models have a separate direct-in LFE low-level input (which bypasses the crossover network) which may be used by itself or in combination with left and right channel high- or low-level inputs for the ultimate in subwoofer flexibility and performance. With a single subwoofer, the subwoofer signal, Dolby Digital* LFE signal and/or both left and right signals are sent to the subwoofer and combined via the electronic crossover into one composite signal. With stereo (two) subwoofers, the left and right signals are reproduced by their own respective subwoofer (and the LFE signal is reproduced by both). Very advanced systems may also use a separate subwoofer hooked up to the rear/side surround channels as well as one to the center channel.

"...full and effortless with an astounding low extension; so tight, controlled and room shaking was this bass!"
Home Cinema Choice

"Shook my sound room so much I had to turn it
down for fear of shaking stuff off the shelves of my
apartment (I kid you not!)"

— Joe Hageman,
Home Theater

“The SuperCube Reference was at
heart an audiophile’s
subwoofer … that speaks forcefully and clearly, yet is capable of remarkable delicacy… equally convincing on music, striking a great balance between power and control … There aren't many subwoofers that can outperform the
SuperCube Reference,
and the few I've heard
that do cost a lot more.
I recommend this
subwoofer highly.”

Chris Martens,
The Perfect Vision

“it doesn’t get much
better than this”

"Flexibility, extension,
and affordability
—it doesn’t get much
better than this. With reach down to the mid-20Hz range, and unflappable behavior at extreme volumes, this 14" cube with its single 10" woofer and dual 10" passive radiators mixes the precision of a sealed- box sub with the additional oomph of a ported enclosure. The 1500-watt amplifier guarantees that current flow will remain unimpeded. With speaker and line level inputs and outputs, variable high/low- pass filtering, and phase alignment, the 60-pound SuperCube does what every subwoofer should do—it performs subliminally".
